Everywhere you turn, “AI-powered” is slapped on tech products like a designer logo, from your toaster’s “smart” settings to the latest SD-WAN solutions. According to the branding, AI has infiltrated our networks, solving every issue with razor-sharp, Terminator-level precision. But are these “AI-powered” SD-WAN solutions actually harboring anything close to real AI? Well, grab a seat, because we’re diving into the details.

“AI” in SD-WAN:

It’s Basically… Advanced Algorithms

First, let’s talk about the basics of SD-WAN and its so-called AI capabilities. SD-WAN technology aims to improve network performance and reliability. It promises to use “AI” to, wait for it, monitor network conditions like latency, jitter, and packet loss.

Groundbreaking stuff, right? Just think: all those things algorithms could already do are now upgraded with the magic sauce of “AI.” But don’t worry, there’s more.

When Algorithms Graduate to “AI”

Just by Checking the Time

One of the supposedly “intelligent” feats of these SD-WAN solutions is recognizing patterns. They can analyze historical data and realize that bandwidth demand tends to rise, let’s say, around 9 a.m. on a weekday.

So, what does this fancy “AI” do? It reroutes traffic to avoid congestion. Brilliant! Or, you know, the kind of thing anyone with access to a calendar could do.

But wait, it’s not just your average morning rush. These SD-WANs learn. They can even, according to marketing materials, predict when paths will degrade. Of course, this “learning” is just pattern recognition on repeat, but who are we to nitpick?

“Self-Healing” Networks

Fixing Problems They Kind of Expected

Next, let’s address the “self-healing” capabilities. These SD-WAN systems don’t just reroute traffic; they can (allegedly) detect anomalies! Think of it as the network raising an eyebrow at odd behavior and saying, “That’s not how things usually go here.”

In practice, this means if there’s a latency spike where it normally wouldn’t occur, the “AI” considers previous patterns and makes a remedial adjustment. It’s like a child learning to avoid touching the stove only after being burned a few times. Revolutionary, right?

But this is where the rubber meets the road: self-healing networks are heavily rule-based. They essentially follow programmed instructions enhanced by pattern-recognition algorithms.

They’re just smart enough to know how to avoid trouble based on previous run-ins. True AI would figure out something entirely novel and respond with independent reasoning, but here we have good old predictable programming at work.

Application-Aware Traffic Shaping

The Art of Differentiation

Then there’s the flashy feature of “application-aware” traffic shaping. If your SD-WAN spots traffic from a video conference, it will, shockingly, prioritize it over file backups. Yes, the “AI” can determine that your Zoom meeting might be more important than uploading cat photos to the cloud, giving priority where it’s needed.

But, of course, this is a series of programmed rules reinforced by data from previous traffic patterns—not a sudden spark of true AI reasoning. The SD-WAN isn’t “thinking” so much as it’s saying, “Video equals priority, okay?”

Predictive Routing

The Glorified GPS of Network Traffic

Here’s another “AI” trick worth mentioning: predictive routing. The AI powers behind SD-WAN apparently give it the psychic ability to select the best paths for data in real-time, sometimes even before congestion hits!

Now, you might think, “Wow, that sounds impressive.” Until you realize it’s just an advanced GPS for traffic, using a historical road map and rerouting data if there’s the faintest sign of congestion. Algorithms have been doing this in different contexts for years, and calling it AI is like calling your car’s cruise control autopilot. But hey, a good buzzword sells, doesn’t it?

Enhanced Algorithms and Machine Learning

The Fine Print of “AI”

So, let’s bring it all together. What SD-WAN vendors are really offering isn’t artificial intelligence in the sense of reasoning or autonomy but instead enhanced algorithms augmented by machine learning.

They track patterns, predict probable future events based on past ones, and follow pre-established rules. None of these abilities come close to the creative problem-solving we’d expect from genuine AI. But hey, why spoil the fun? “Enhanced Algorithms” just doesn’t have the same marketing ring, does it?

The Verdict

Calling it “AI” is a Stretch, But the Label Isn’t Going Anywhere

In the end, maybe we’re all a little smarter after examining what’s behind the label. And hey, next time your network goes down, just remember: it’s probably hard at work, thinking of which algorithm to try next.

Is “AI-powered” SD-WAN truly artificial intelligence?

Hardly. It’s predictive analytics on a caffeine boost, fine-tuned machine learning algorithms wrapped in a blanket of marketing lingo. If anything, SD-WAN is smart—just not that kind of smart.

But as long as people equate “AI” with problem-solving magic, SD-WAN vendors will keep rolling out the “AI-powered” stamp.

Intellian has designed several terrestrial fixed and maritime parabolic user terminals which can be implemented in a variety of situations.

The models are distinct in 3 categories:

Dual Parabolic Maritime

Used in an in-motion environment on board sea going vessels the OW50M and OW70M consist of two parabolic antennas which simultaneously connect to the available satellites. These antennas can be configures so that they are aware of permanent signal blockage areas (like masts and funnels) and are capable of mitigating connection outage as long as one of the two antennas has connectivity.

Dual Parabolic Terrestrial

The OW70L is a dual fixed terrestrial User Terminal for Eutelsat OneWeb combining two LEO satellite tracking parabolic antennas and one modem, whereby the satellite signal is alternatively sent to the modem by the Primary Antenna or the Secondary Antenna.

While one of both antennas is tracking the other paused parabolic antenna is preparing itself for the next satellite that will come into view.

Single Parabolic

If very short outages are not a problem on your network then you can opt for the Single Parabolic version that will need only 800ms to switch between two consecutive satellites.

In our increasingly connected world, the quest for reliable, global communication solutions has never been more critical. This is especially true in remote, underserved, or critical sectors like maritime operations, remote education, healthcare facilities, and emergency services, where the usual terrestrial communication networks may not reach or can be unreliable. Understanding the technical advancements and offerings in satellite communications can arm us with the knowledge to bridge these gaps, ensuring that essential services remain uninterrupted and efficient, no matter the location on the globe.

The Intellian C200M and C200L terminals have emerged as pioneering solutions in this realm, leveraging the robust Iridium Certus network. This network’s unique constellation of 66 Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites offers unmatched global coverage, extending from pole to pole. Such extensive coverage ensures that users in even the most remote locations have access to reliable communication channels.

Versatility and design

The technical capabilities of the C200M and C200L terminals set them apart in the satellite communications landscape. Both models offer impressive data rates of up to 176 kbps for both upload and download, a standard among Iridium Certus 200 terminals. However, it’s their capacity for providing three independent, high-quality voice lines with minimal latency that significantly enhances their appeal. This feature is particularly valuable in critical communication scenarios where clarity and delay can determine the outcome of a situation.

From a user perspective, the versatility and design of these terminals cater to a wide array of needs. The C200M is perfectly suited for maritime applications, offering primary voice and data communication services for leisure and fishing vessels outside LTE coverage. Its role extends to commercial shipping, serving as a reliable VSAT backup or as part of an intelligent hybrid network, and even in commanding and controlling long-range unmanned surface vessels (USVs).

Compact and lightweight design

On the other hand, the C200L finds its strength in land-fixed installations, providing an essential backup for voice and data communications for offices, schools, and hospitals in the event of terrestrial network failures. It also serves as a critical component for out-of-band management (OOBM) for land-based VSAT terminals and as a deployable communications device when encased appropriately for transit. This versatility highlights the terminals’ role in ensuring continuity of operations and communications across various sectors.

Addressing potential concerns, the integration of the Iridium Certus modem directly into the antenna unit’s (ADU) circuitry ensures seamless compatibility with the Iridium constellation, eliminating compatibility issues that can arise with satellite communication equipment. Furthermore, their compact and lightweight design does not compromise their robustness or reliability, making them ideal for scenarios requiring mobility or limited space.

In terms of data security and reliability, the direct connection to the Iridium Certus network provides a secure and dependable communication link, mitigating the risk of communication failures or eavesdropping that can occur with terrestrial networks. This is particularly crucial in sensitive environments like healthcare, maritime navigation, and emergency response operations, where the integrity and reliability of communication can have significant implications.

Intellian’s OneWeb Parabolic Terminals: A Technological Leap Forward

Breaking Down Barriers: The OW Series

Intellian’s latest accomplishment, the Eutelsat OneWeb Type Approval for its OW70L Primary-Primary and OW130L Primary-Secondary terminals, marks a significant milestone. These terminals complete the OW Series – a range of parabolic antennas designed for diverse applications. But what sets these terminals apart?

The OW70L is a marvel of adaptability and urban performance, skillfully overcoming signal blockages, a common urban challenge, and boasts an impressive 200m antenna separation capability. On the other hand, the OW130L, with its 125 cm reflector, is a powerhouse designed for defense, emergency services, and cellular backhaul, ensuring unwavering connectivity even in harsh weather conditions.

Enterprise and Maritime Solutions: Meeting Critical Communication Needs

Intellian’s Enterprise and Maritime terminals are more than just hardware. They are the backbone of reliable and resilient communication, especially in critical scenarios. Delivering Eutelsat OneWeb’s Committed Information Rate (CIR), these terminals deliver consistent performance, essential for sectors where communication can mean the difference between success and failure.

The OneWeb Parabolic Terminal Features: A Closer Look

Uninterrupted Connectivity: Seamless handover between Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites ensures continuous communication.

High-Speed, Low Latency Links: Catering to the demands of the modern digital world.

Extreme Weather Performance: Reliable functionality, even in the coldest temperatures.

User-Friendly Design: A simple one-cable interface integrates both modem and power supply.

Innovative Blockage Mitigation: Overcoming physical obstructions for clear signal paths.

Keyhole Avoidance: A design that cleverly navigates around common signal interference issues.

OneWeb Parabolic Terminal Specifications: A Technical Overview

Delving into the specifications, we find a range of user terminals, each uniquely designed for specific needs. From the OW50SL’s compact 53 cm dish to the OW130L’s formidable 125 cm reflector, there’s a solution for every scenario. Enhanced G/T ratios, expansive azimuth and elevation ranges, and thoughtful design elements like blockage mitigation feature across the series, catering to land and maritime needs alike.

Product Pricing: Investment in Future-Proof Technology

With prices ranging from $9,110 for the basic OW50SL to $44,000 for the high-end OW130L with a heating module, Intellian’s terminals represent a significant investment. However, it’s an investment in reliability, performance, and future-proof technology, essential in today’s fast-paced world.

Whether for a remote office, a maritime adventure, or critical field operations, Intellian’s terminals offer a promise – the promise of staying connected, no matter where you are.

Conclusion: Connecting the World, One Terminal at a Time

Intellian’s OneWeb Parabolic Terminals aren’t just products; they are enablers of a connected future. In a world where communication is key, these terminals are not just tools, but gateways to endless possibilities.

Businesses, especially those in mobile, maritime, and remote locations, often find themselves grappling with unreliable, slow, and expensive internet services. This struggle directly impacts their operations and customer experiences. But a groundbreaking announcement from Peplink might just be the solution they’ve been waiting for.

On January 16, 2024, Peplink entered a significant agreement with SpaceX’s Starlink, marking a new era in satellite internet services. This partnership, turning Peplink into an Authorized Technology Provider for Starlink, promises to tackle the three big challenges of cost, speed, and reliability head-on.

Here’s the deal: combining Starlink’s Flat High Performance terminal with Peplink’s SD-WAN routers. This integration is a game-changer. Imagine having access to affordable, fast, and reliable Internet bandwidth globally, without the usual geographical constraints. It’s like having your own portable super-highway of data, accessible anywhere.

Alex Chan, CEO of Peplink, couldn’t have put it better: “Our combined solution gives any business access to affordable, fast, and reliable Internet bandwidth globally.” It’s a bold statement, but the results are already speaking for themselves.

Take the cruise industry, for example. Previously plagued by poor internet, a recent deployment of Peplink’s multi-link aggregation routers, coupled with multiple Starlink terminals, has transformed the on-board experience. The result? Internet speeds over 1Gbps, a significant operational cost reduction, and, most importantly, happy passengers staying connected even in the middle of the ocean.

Samuel (Chad) Gibbs IV from Starlink shares this enthusiasm, highlighting the seamless internet connectivity now possible on cruise ships, thanks to this alliance. It’s not just about speed and cost; it’s about making the impossible, possible.

The real magic lies in the Peplink router’s ability to combine multiple Starlink units, meeting even the most demanding bandwidth requirements. Imagine a single Starlink offering more than 220 Mbps download and 25 Mbps upload speeds.

It’s breaking down barriers, reaching new markets, and creating experiences that were once thought impossible.

P.S. Can you imagine your business going global with this tech? Yes or No?

It’s hypothetical … or is it ?

First off, let me tell you straight up, the notion of Starlink introducing Service Level Agreements (SLAs) is a real game-changer, and I’m not just saying that. This could really shake things up in the satellite communication world, especially when you stack it up against OneWeb. Let’s break it down:

SLAs, usually in the form of CIR (Committed Information Rates – minimum guaranteed bandwidth) are typically associated with a commitment to reliability and quality of service.

If Starlink were to offer SLAs, it would enhance its reputation as a reliable service provider. This could increase customer trust and potentially draw customers who are waiting for OneWeb or considering other providers.

It means business

Business customers, in particular, look for guaranteed service levels, as downtime can have significant financial implications. You don’t want your production vessel to start stuttering on your weekly conference call, do you?

It immediately gives a whole new meaning to a-hole-in-your-wallet. Offering SLAs could make Starlink more attractive to this segment, potentially giving it an edge over OneWeb, which is still in the process of setting up its network.

The introduction of SLAs often comes with different pricing structures. Starlink might introduce tiered service levels with varying pricing, which could attract a wider range of customers.

However, this could also lead to higher prices for guaranteed service levels, affecting the affordability that has been one of Starlink’s advantages but may very well still position it below other offers. CIR does not necessarily mean super high top speed bandwidth, but it does mean that it will be there when you need it.

I hear the GEO’s starting to sputter …

To offer SLAs, Starlink would need to ensure its network’s performance can consistently meet the promised standards. This might require additional investment in technology and infrastructure, potentially impacting its operational costs.

But if you look at their current capacity, reserving a (small) portion of it that will NOT be consumed by Netflix should not be all too complicated, QoS and some routing can do miracles. (yup, I oversimplify)

Positive may very well be that If Starlink starts offering SLAs, OneWeb and other competitors might accellerate their commercial plans or revise their service offerings to remain competitive. This could lead to a more rapidly evolving market with various providers trying to outdo each other in service quality and reliability. Or maybe just make them shift to a higher gear forward.

Offering SLAs might also help Starlink in dealing with regulatory requirements in different countries, thereby aiding its global expansion efforts. It could also position Starlink favorably in markets where reliable communication is crucial, such as in remote education, healthcare, and disaster management.

Just do it – Swoosh

The pressure to maintain SLA standards is one that has been juggled for decades in the ‘classic’ VSAT world and there must be sufficient expertise to replicate this in a larger size constellation. Maybe National network operators managing thousands of nodes on land could assist Starlink to innovate and continuously improve its service.

This would benefit not just their customers but could set a higher standard in the satellite internet industry. Starlink offering SLAs would likely intensify competition in the satellite internet market, compelling all players, including OneWeb, to elevate their service offerings. It could lead to improved services for customers but might also come with higher costs and necessitate significant investment in network infrastructure and technology.

A look at the numbers:

With over 5000 satellites @ 20Gbps each, over 150 Groundstations and about 2,000,000 best effort subscribers I think they have sufficient capacity to do some CIR magic … What do you think Elon, 5% of current capacity?

One truth stands unwavering: Understanding traffic classification can transform how we communicate, especially as we extend our reach beyond Earth’s orbit.

Let’s embark on a journey through the cosmos of communication, focusing on traffic classification, a pivotal aspect in the evolving landscape of mobile communication networks, business development, and satellite technology.

The Core of Traffic Classification

At its heart, traffic classification is the process of categorizing network traffic. This practice enables efficient management, security, and optimization of data transmission. In terrestrial networks, it’s like the traffic cop of the digital highway, guiding data to its destination.

But why does this matter in space? As we venture into space, data becomes not just a stream of ones and zeroes but a lifeline, a bridge between Earth and the unknown.

The Challenge in Space

The space environment introduces unique challenges. Distances are vast, signals weaken, and traditional methods of classification might falter. Imagine a signal traveling thousands of kilometers through the vacuum of space – it’s a marathon runner, enduring, but gradually losing strength.

Space demands robust, adaptable, and intelligent traffic classification systems. These systems must distinguish between mission-critical commands and routine data updates, ensuring that crucial information reaches its destination promptly and reliably.

Adapting to Different Orbits

Each orbit – whether low Earth orbit (LEO), medium Earth orbit (MEO), or geostationary orbit (GEO) – has its quirks.

LEO: Close to Earth, satellites in LEO have lower latency, making them ideal for real-time applications. But they zip around the planet swiftly, creating a need for dynamic traffic management.

MEO: A middle ground, MEO offers a balance, suitable for navigation and broader coverage applications.

GEO: Farthest out, GEO satellites hold a fixed position relative to Earth, offering consistent coverage but with higher latency.

Traffic classification in each orbit must adapt, prioritizing data based on latency, bandwidth, and application needs.

Integration with Earth Networks

Space-based networks don’t operate in isolation. They must integrate seamlessly with terrestrial networks. This integration demands a nuanced approach to traffic classification, ensuring compatibility and efficiency across diverse network architectures.

The handshake between Earth and space networks is delicate. It requires meticulous timing and coordination.

The Role of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) can revolutionize traffic classification in space. It can predict, learn, and adapt, making real-time decisions that would be impossible for human operators.

Picture AI as the mastermind, analyzing patterns, predicting needs, and allocating bandwidth

Predictive Analysis: AI excels in forecasting network demands. By analyzing patterns, it can anticipate peaks and troughs in traffic, ensuring networks are primed for fluctuations.

Real-time Decision Making: With AI, traffic classification becomes a dynamic process. AI algorithms can make split-second decisions, rerouting traffic to avoid congestion or potential threats.

Learning and Adapting: AI is not static; it learns and evolves. Over time, it refines its classification strategies, becoming more efficient and effective.

Security Implications

Security in space is paramount. Traffic classification plays a vital role here, identifying and mitigating threats.

Future Innovations
